I provide a Forest School experience for adults, with an emphasis on wellbeing and nature connection. Each adult session gives participants the opportunity to step back, slow down and explore a range of activities in a beautiful woodland setting.
Spending time in green spaces, particularly amongst trees, has been shown to have a real and lasting positive impact on our physical and mental health and wellbeing- and the feeling of being connected to nature is something that many people are discovering joy and meaning from in their otherwise busy and complicated lives.
Sessions typically include activities such as guided meditations, forest bathing, mindfulness and mindful photography, nature journaling, collaborative land art projects, traditional arts and crafts, making items using simple hand tools and foraging to make wild teas. Each monthly session can be either a stand alone experience or enjoyed as part of a continued programme, allowing you to return as often as you like to develop your skills and interests- or simply to benefit from a little bit of regular ‘me time’ surrounded by nature.
Hi, I’m Ruth.
I have 20 years experience working in local secondary schools- and for 16 of those I was a teacher of art and design. Over the last 4 years I’ve worked in Forest Schools, starting out in 2019 as a volunteer and going on to gain the Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification, which enabled me to work on a freelance basis for children aged 5-11 in holiday clubs.
In 2021 I developed a Forest School intervention programme for secondary school students with SEND, including those with Autism, ADHD and SEMH, together with a wellbeing programme for students who would benefit from learning outside in a woodland environment. Both programmes showed great results in terms of building confidence and resilience. Student found great enjoyment from the experience- they became natural leaders, guiding and supporting each other and it was a privilege to be part of their success.
On a personal level, I spend much of my free time outdoors and, having experienced the benefits to my own wellbeing of being around trees in particular, I’d like to help others to connect with nature in the same way.
I am Fully insured, DBS checked and hold a certificate in outdoor first aid. In September 2023 I became a licenced Woodcraft for Wellbeing Practitioner, having completed the Certificate in Adult Mental Health and Wellbeing for Outdoor Leaders, with The Therapeutic Forest CIC. I have also completed training for the Hill and Moorland Leader award to allow me to lead guided walks.
Sessions cost £25 per person* and run from 10am- 12.30pm. We enjoy our green space in all weathers- shelters will be erected if needed but please wear suitable outdoor clothing. Waterproofs and layers are good, sun hats too! A warm drink will be provided but please bring your own drinks and snacks to enjoy at your leisure. In addition, you will receive a sketchbook for nature journaling and any items you make during the session can be taken home with you.
I look forward to meeting you and spending time in the woods!
*10% of all fees from sessions held at Prince of Wales Park in Bingley will be donated to the Friends group to help with maintenance of the park.
